( Art )
The initiators of Sudah, Jessica and Judith, work in the art and design field and strongly believe in the unique way that artists can convey a story. They do this on a different level, revealing different parts, storylines, or details than words alone can. For this reason, they invited two artists, both with Moluccan backgrounds, to create new work for the book based on the stories, recipes, or other elements of Sudah. Yara Jimmink and Jaya Pelupessy immersed themselves in the history and stories of the Patty family, resulting in two compelling new series of photographic works that subtly bring out the multiple layers of the narrative both visually and in meaning.
Yara Jimmink, Cooking Time circa 25 hours, 2024
Moluccan-Dutch photographer Yara Jimmink uses art to explore themes such as migration, family, and collective memory. Her work offers subtle reflections on the impact of colonisation and the enduring connection between past and present. Through her compositions, she touches on complex themes without imposing them or seeking to explain them explicitly.
For Sudah, Jimmink created an intriguing series of still lifes centred on the ingredients of the Patty family’s recipes. In her work, she explores tradition, memory, and the relationship between past and present
Yara JimminkJaya Pelupessy, Flatten Image – Sudah, 2024
In Flatten Image, Jaya Pelupessy investigates authenticity and the value of reproduction in photography. Using images captured directly on light-sensitive paper, seemingly negatives, he plays with the idea of a photographic “original.”
For Sudah, Pelupessy integrates cherished objects from the Patty family into his images, such as grandma’s tjobek and Eau de Cologne, and grandpa’s Bibles and hat. These objects are woven into a visual narrative that connects the history of the Patty family with Pelupessy’s own Moluccan background and identity. In this way, he creates a layered story in both image and meaning.
