Podcast Sudah

Sudah. A well-known phrase in the Patty family, as in many other Moluccan families. Sudah: enough, stop! It can also mean: we leave the past where it is. We are now in the Netherlands, and we look ahead. But what did this attitude mean for passing on Moluccan family history? And which family stories does Jessica, part of the third generation, want to pass on to her own daughter, Madelief?

Jessica’s grandfather, Johannes Patty, was born in the early twentieth century into a well-off, prominent Moluccan family on the island of Saparua. He married Maria Sipasulta, the daughter of a teacher. In the late 1930s they left their homeland because Johannes went to work for the oil company NNGPM in Dutch New Guinea. In 1960, just before New Guinea was handed over to Indonesia, they spent their entire savings on a passage to the Netherlands with their six daughters. In the Netherlands, Johannes went to work in a factory so that he could pay for his daughters’ education. A hard blow: all his life he had been Mister Patty, and now he was addressed with nothing more than “Hey, Patty”.

Looking ahead, that is what the Patty daughters did. They pursued an education, married blanda’s, and their children climbed even further. They became Dutch, yet remained Moluccan too. What is their Moluccan history, and how does it continue to affect their lives today? That is what the podcast Sudah explores, in four episodes.

The podcast is available, in Dutch, on this website as well as on spotify.
